What a Disaster! For Grades 6 to 8 Have you ever wondered from where thunderstorms and tornadoes come? Do you know why volcanoes erupt and earthquakes shake the earth? Have you ever thought about how hurricanes, floods and tidal waves are formed? These are some questions you can use to introduce the What A Disaster! project to your class. Over the next few weeks you and your students will research and discuss different types of natural disasters and their impact on the world. Your students will develop a deeper appreciation for and understanding of the effects that these weather patterns and natural events have on people and their surroundings. This project creates a simulation of a real-world activity. Students will become engaged in learning, as they become authorities on a variety of natural disasters. They will act as travel agents, collecting information and providing travel advice to globetrotting scientists who specialize in the study of tornadoes, volcanoes, earthquakes and other natural disasters around the world. What A Disaster! is an interdisciplinary project that addresses performance standards in Science, Geography, Mathematics, and Language Arts.
