Step Into the Shoes of An Explorer!

For Grades 3 to 5

Have you ever imagined what it was like to be an explorer? What motivated explorers to do what they did? How many and how long were their journeys? What hardships did they have to endure? Were their journeys always successful? Finally, what contributions did they make and what impact do they have on our lives today?

These are some of the thought provoking questions your students will be investigating in the Step Into the Shoes of An Explorer project. Using multimedia, research materials and the Internet, students will develop reading, writing, listening, and speaking skills as they gain an understanding of and an appreciation for the hardships that explorers faced as they traveled and discovered new lands.

Step Into the Shoes of An Explorer is designed to help students improve language arts skills as well as develop their social studies problem finding and solving, research, and communication skills. Capitalizing on the natural curiosity of students, this project helps students develop higher level thinking skills by having them synthesize different ideas and facts to create an original, written product.
