That Would Make a Great Movie!

For Grades 4 to 8

Have you ever read a book and thought “Wow! That would make a really great movie!”

For as long as movies have been around, books have been a source of inspiration. However, not all of these movies have turned out to be as good as the original books. Sometimes the very thing that makes a book great also makes it very difficult to turn it into a great movie. In a few, rare occasions, however the movie can be as good as, if not better than, the book on which it is based.

During That Would Make a Great Movie!, your language arts class will be turned into a major motion picture studio. Your students will be challenged to find great books and turn them into great movies. At first this may seem a “simple” task. However, as your students become immersed in the business of movie making, they will learn that making a good movie isn’t enough; they also have to make a profit.

Your class will decide which book will make the best movie. Students will work cooperatively to research which books have already been made into movies and which books will appeal to their target audience. They will respond to memos from studio executives, as well as make decisions about the movie’s format, budget, cast, special effects, and possible release dates. The class will create and publish a studio newsletter to keep the entire studio informed about their research. Finally, students will use their research to create a multimedia presentation to “pitch” their movie ideas to investors.
