Many habits that compromise the health of adults begin during childhood and adolescence. Serious health issues, such as diabetes, cancer, obesity, and heart disease, can be prevented or controlled through healthier choices.

Health Watch!

For Grades 5 - 8

Project Description

The Health Watch! project engages students in a study of critical health topics such as smoking, nutrition, dental health, personal hygiene, and fitness. Students identify influences that affect health choices and recognize how personal choices contribute to good health.

Students become “authorities” on critical health issues as they complete the activities in this project. They will create brochures, posters, books, presentations, and other products and take an active role in teaching what they have learned to their school and their community. This project strives to engage students by appealing to their natural creativity and curiosity. It uses technology to give students access to a variety of resources as they develop an in-depth understanding of the body, its health, and positive life choices.

In many schools, heath curriculum is relegated to a small portion of the science or physical education curriculum. Health Watch! takes a interdisciplinary approach to health education. Designed for the middle school, Health Watch! integrates reading, writing, and critical thinking into many content areas. The activities are driven by the national standards of several disciplines, including science, English language arts, mathematics, social studies, and fine arts.

The project begins with a brief introduction that assesses and augments students’ prior knowledge about various health topics. This is followed by three distinct yet interrelated learning phases:

  • Investigating Our Body: Students work cooperatively to conduct in-depth research about various systems of the human body. Students take their classmates on  virtual tour of the systems and organs of the human body. They create graphic organizers, brochures, presentations, and interactive quizzes to assess learning.
  • Healthy Habits: Are illnesses and injuries preventable? Students develop an understanding of how the risk of many health problems can be reduced through healthier choices and habits. Students will have an opportunity to choose both topic and presentation format as they develop an advertising campaign to promote healthy practices on issues relevant to their peers.
  • Agents of Change: Students promote healthy habits for younger students by applying their newfound knowledge to write and publish a children’s book that synthesizes what they have learned.

The culminating activity will be a Health Expo. This day will be an opportunity to celebrate student achievement. Students will inform their school community about what they have learned and display related projects to invited guests.
