For Early Childhood What is a journalist? What does a journalist do? A journalist is a person who works as a writer and a reporter for a newspaper or a television station. A journalist researches the news and then reports important facts to the public. He or she keeps people informed so that they can make educated decisions in their lives. Over the next few weeks, your kindergarten, first, or second grade students will become Jellybean Journalists. They will work in small cooperative groups to become experts in one or more aspects of the news. Through the use of a comprehensive literacy program, Exploring Nonfiction, and various other news media including the Internet, your young journalists will research news stories as they develop critical literacy strategies. Your journalists will also break new ground by using the computer as an educational tool to plan and present a newscast. The Jellybean Journalists project is designed to develop and build a foundation of strong reading and communication skills. It provides a variety of reading experiences in various content areas while addressing performance standards in English Language Arts, Science, Social Studies, and Mathematics. The Project provides a vehicle for early childhood teachers to introduce young students to the concept of research and related strategies in the context of a real-world activity. Finally, this project provides your students with a genuine opportunity to present information and ideas in front of an audience in meaningful and exciting fashion.
