A Marvelous Myth-Adventure

Appropriate for Grades 4 to 8

Did you know that the sun rises at the bequest of a golden chariot? Did you know that thunder and lightning are caused by the wrath of an ancient god? Did you know that great and noble heroes have actually battled monsters in pursuit of a sacred quest?

There was a time when statements like these not only were made, but also believed. Today, we call them myths. Yet, to many earlier cultures they were revered religious beliefs. Over the next few weeks, your class will become immersed in a study of mythology. Your students will research many interesting facts about the cultures that were influenced by these mythologies. The students will discover the beliefs behind the mythologies, as they work cooperatively to become experts about ancient and medieval mythology.

A Marvelous Myth-Adventure is an interdisciplinary project that addresses standards in English Language Arts, Math, Science, Social Studies, and the Arts. Classes may choose to research one or more of the following mythologies: Egyptian, Greek, Roman, Celtic, or Teutonic. Alternatively, students may choose to do a general study of mythologies from around the world.
